As a teenager in the late 1940s, Samuel Magaña told his father he was leaving his hometown of Amaculi, a village in the mountains near Tamazula de Victoria in the Mexican state of Durango. His father gave him a sermon, pointing out that at least in Amaculi he would always have people ready to help him out in a pinch.

Then his father gave him a few dollars for his train fare.
